Taking calcium faithfully is supposed to help with PMS/menstrual symptoms (see here for more info). Now, here's the trick: if you're IBS-C (prone to constipation), take your calcium, but because it can be constipating, take half as much magnesium with it (so if you're taking 1000 mg calcium, pref. calcium citrate, also take 500 mg magnesium). But if you're IBS-D (prone to diarrhea), skip the magnesium, and take calcium carbonate (like Tums). Finally, whichever type of IBS you have, split the 1000 mg of calcium into 2 500 mg doses, because that's all your body can absorb at one time. There, is that now clear as mud?
