No, it doesn't sound like fun! I have had a flexible sigmoidoscopy along with a number of other tests, but I haven't had a colonoscopy. It's not my recommendation not to have one, but I feel confident with my original diagnosis (which was almost 12 years ago) and am able to stay stable by following an IBS-safe diet and using Imodium as needed. I do know that if my symptoms didn't improve or if I have a major setback, I would definitely have a colonoscopy.

I'm glad you're seeing a specialist though, because he or she may be able to provide you with more answers, some peace of mind, and maybe a prescription for an anti-spasmodic.
