Hello! I have started going to a naturopath and it has helped the constipation. The first part of her plan was for me to do a cleanse - CleanseSmart by Renewlife. There are two parts to it, and I was never able to take the full dose of the colon cleanse portion because it worked too well. If you are interested in only that part of the cleanse it is also sold separately as CleanseMore. The only negative thing about it is the cramping that would happen right before a BM.
The second part was dietary suggestions. Her advice was that the plate at lunch and supper should be divided into three sections - 1/4 protein, 1/4 starch, and 1/2 the plate should be vegetables. This is the tricky part, because many foods we consider vegetable are actually considered starches - corn, peas, green/yellow beans, root vegetables such as carrots and beets, squash and pumpkin. The list of choices for vegetables are leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, sprouts, asparagus.
She also gave me a list of foods to watch out for as many people have sensitivities to them. These include oranges, artificial sweeteners, corn, coffee, alcohol, tomatoes, bell peppers, peanuts, soy, dairy, meat and wheat.
This isn't the easiest diet to follow and during the holiday season it was almost impossible for me to even come close to following it, but when I did follow it I had major improvement in most of my symptoms. I have even been into dairy products over the holidays without major consequences. She has me taking digestive enzymes and the long term goal is to improve my situation so I only need to take stuff like that occasionally. Right now I take the CleanseMore pills if I start to feel constipated or if I ate something I probably shouldn't have ate. For me it takes at least 12 hours for those to kick in. I'm also taking a calcium-magnesium supplement, but that alone hasn't been enough to prevent constipation. It's definitely worth trying out even part of this plan.
Hope this helps!
