Dr. appt- melatonin and unpassed stool

First of all my doc reaffirmed the idea that there is no unpassed stool in the body. I guess the quote that the FDA says we average 5-12 pounds of the stuff is fabricated. If I think I do have unpassed stool and tortuous colon with pockets of gunk then I can opt for a barium enema.

About melatonin: my doc had not heard of this at all. She went and did a quick internet search and still found nothing. My Google search found tons of links to the article about melatonin 3mg a day for 2 weeks from the research library. She just told me to start at the lowest dose I could.
I also think I have been getting melatonin and seratonin mixed up. I just want to not be so much worse in winter. Is it SAD affecting my gut? Is it lack of daylight? Is it a little less activity and more food? I need to exercise as much as possible for sure and try to eat less to start with. I think I am going to try a test of melatonin for a couple weeks. I am going to try only 1mg. If the pain improves then great. I just have to survive the winter pains and bloat.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!
