I got pretty lucky, I think. I have this insane fear/hate of doctors (heh) so I didn't see mine until well after I was on Heather's diet. At that point I kinda just wanted confirmation that I didn't have stomach cancer or something more terrible and that it was just IBS. I never saw a GI, just my family doctor (that's pretty typical in Canada I think). Anyway, he told me that diet definitely, definitely plays a big role but that there aren't really many general rules that work for all IBS sufferers. High fiber and low fat, he said (he didn't specify what kind of fiber but I didn't press him). Try going off of dairy and wheat for a few weeks and see how you are with that. Keep a food journal to find out your own intollerances, and find something to help managae your stress.
Which, all in all, is pretty good advice I think. So it makes me so angry when I hear about people like this who have had to go through such $h!t like this with their doctors!!
Please remember that your doctor does not have authority over your body. If you know that Heather's diet is working for you, DO NOT listen to his bowls of high fiber cereal advice. Don't go on any medication that YOU know isn't good for your body. You know your body better than your doctor ever, ever could. And most of all - don't let his bull$h!t stress you out!!! Argh. Stupid doctors. IBS is not life-threatening. He doesn't know everything. If you don't follow his advice, your IBS will not get worse or anything (it will probably get better!)
Phew, ok /end rant/ Didn't mean to offend or anything of course so I hope I haven't. I just have a 'thing' with doctors
