Lol! Pears really really really make me poop, too!!! Raw pears make me hugely gassy...cooked pears don't give me gas at all.
Poaching a pear is so easy--just peel, halve, core, and immerse in a liquid of choice (WINE rocks for this), juice (something tart rocks, too), sweetened tea, whatever and cook/stew. Asian Pears are really good cooked in green tea with brown sugar or honey...use a little lemon, as well. Toss in cinnamon, cloves, cardamon...use your imagination. I'll dig up a recipe and post it.
Pears are divine roasted in the oven. The natural sugars carmelize.
Add a little cornstarch or arrowroot and you have a glorious thick sauce/syrup.
Of course, the sugar stuff is optional. There's stevia, as well, I suppose. My favourite way, though, is to do it in wine when I have people over for dessert.
Don't laugh, but I generally prefer to roast them in the oven and not worry about paying attention/monitoring them. Just put dessert in with dinner!!! MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than pie, and probably healthier, too.
