Ashley!!!
I've never tried Acacia. Truly, I'm happiest with Benefiber--powder form. Metemucil was evil, nasty, disasterous and didn't do anything for me, rather make my D worse! Not to mention the bloating.
I thought I was fiber intolerant. Then, on a whim--and the suggestion of my Doc.--I tried Benefiber. It really works/clicks with me. Maria mentioned how easily the powder blends--heck, there are even recipes on the site! Yes, go figure. I'm pretty sure that a vegan name brand egg replacer contains guar gum, the main component of Benefiber. Like acacia, it is also prebiotic. I love mixing it with soy yogurt--get that double whammy pre/pro--biotic effect! You can easily blend it with a sauce/dressing, soup, cereal/oatmeal, rice...whatever even--a big mug of sexy tea, a smoothie/protein shake, applesauce?, fruit stuff...
It doesn't make me gassy, bloated.
Heck, I'm plugging up the toilet!
It's important, though, to drink lots of fluid--I guess that's the case with any SFS. If you don't, it won't work and well...it actually plugs you up.
Honestly, I was amazed that it didn't give me grief--anything but/butt!!! It doesn't constipate me, either.
It really helps stabilize me--wonderful for 'mopping up' excess fluid in the colon because it is purely soluable fiber. Guar gum is a stabilizing agent, incidentally...it's often added to cosmetics, baked goods, dressings, soy cheeses, puddings, icecreams, etc.--I used to eat gf breads and they contain guar gum, often.
I know that if I'm not on the "fiber-train" things are pretty ugly!
Weird, though...the popularity of benefiber with D's! I usually get a 42 dose container of it at Cost Co.
So...3 Tbsp. of acacia would equal about 21g sf? I take 4-6 tbsp. of benefiber--it's 3g sf/tbsp. So, most days I take about 15g.
Hope this rambling is helpful.
Kate, IBS-D.
