As the others said, it is not just the lactose in milk that is a trigger - it's the fact that it is DAIRY. Drinking lactose-free milk won't help you much. That's like eating a hamburger instead of a cheeseburger - sure, it's better because you're cutting out one trigger (the cheese), but it's still very very bad for your IBS because you left another trigger (the red meat) still in there.

I know that I would rather have "smelly gas" - and take a Gas-X - from soymilk, than deal with the consequences of drinking dairy.
