It's frustrating, but this is another one of those things that's an individual tolerance. Some people can have the milk proteins and derivatives (casein, etc), some people find that they're still a trigger. I'm fine with them. I've also been fine with items that have no dairy ingredients but the "allergy alert" on them, like you mentioned. All you can do is give them a try and see how your body reacts. Personally, I waited till I was doing the diet for a couple months and was a little more stable to try them, so it was easier to see if something was a problem, but that's ultimately up to you.
Obviously, things that are definitely dairy - milk, cheese, etc - should be avoided, even in low-fat forms.
