Greetings! Alright...I understand from reading the site that dairy is a major trigger for IBS, and understandably so. I have just been diagnosed with IBS, have had diarrhea *constantly* (literally!) for the past 3 or 4 months. I did the "what to eat when you cannot eat anything" diet for about a week or week and half, and have not had any severe diarrhea for the last three days. Still loose, but dramatic improvement.
My real question is, exactly to what extent must you eliminate dairy? I am *certainly* willing to do what it takes, but I hate to eliminate otherwise healthy food choices unnecessarily. For instance, am I correct in assuming that a food that has no dairy ingredients for lists diary as an "allergy alert" would still be safe, because it is only listed in the case of manufacturer cross-contamination? Surely trace amounts of dairy (especially if only a small portion of the food is eaten) would be tolerable? What about some of the "milk derived porteins" that often are in the ingredient list in the "may contain less than 2% of the following" category. Are those products safe, or are they triggers also?
Thanks so much for helping me understand.
Alyssa
