I emailed Macaroni Grill via their Website to ask what might be safe to eat there and this is what I got. I'm including how I asked the question because there are some holes (I didn't exclude salads, for example) that you might want to be aware of if you decide to use these recommendations as a starting point.
The person who wrote back did NOT specifically recommend any of their pasta dishes, but since most of the pasta does not contain egg yolk, it should be possible to cross-examine the waitstaff to find a sauce that's safe.
I said: I have some dietary restrictions and I would like to get some idea of what foods on Macaroni Grill's menu would be okay for me to eat. First, please rest assured that I do NOT have one of those deadly allergies to peanuts or mustard or whatever; I simply have a sensitive digestive system that should avoid certain foods. If I get one of them by mistake, I will be uncomfortable, but I will not be seriously ill.
Second, I will use whatever information you give me as a starting point only. When I actually go to Macaroni Grill, I can tell the waitstaff that I have dietary restrictions, that Quality Assurance has told me that certain menu items will probably meet those restrictions, and ask the waitstaff to double-check with the kitchen to be sure.
That said, here are my restrictions: 1) No meat except white meat chicken, white meat turkey, and seafood. Entrees with no meat at all are fine. 2) No whole grains. 3) Nothing fried. 4) No dairy. This means no milk, no cream sauces, no cheese (sob!), and no butter. 5) No egg yolks.
Can you let me know which menu items are likely to meet these restrictions, either as usually prepared or with possible modifications, such as asking the kitchen to leave off the cheese or cook with oil rather than butter?
Two specific questions: The wonderful bread you serve before the meal - does it contain butter? And your pasta - is it made with egg yolks?
Macaroni Grill said: Regarding your two specific questions, I can report that the bread that is served at the table does not contain butter. Also our pastas are free of eggs with the exception of the lasagna sheets and the raviolis which do contain egg.
I've reviewed our menu items and have a couple of suggestions. You can take a look at our menu at www.macaronigrill.com and review the "Sensible Fare" section. In this section of the menu you will find the options below and I'd make the following revisions underlined below.
Simple Salmon Grilled salmon filet with grilled asparagus. Ask for no sauce or butter on fish.
Chicken Toscana An 8 oz. marinated chicken breast with lemon zest served on a Mediterranean salad of cucumber, tomato, arugula, bacon and fat-free feta tossed with Toscana dressing. Leave off the bacon and the fat free feta cheese.
Mediterranean Shrimp Five grilled jumbo shrimp on a lightly dressed Mediterranean salad of cucumber, tomato, arugula and fat-free feta. Leave off the cheese and request no butter on shrimp just in case.
Pollo Magro "Skinny Chicken" Grilled 6-oz. chicken breast on steamed spinach and topped with roasted tomatoes, onions and honey balsamic glaze. Leave off honey balsamic glaze.
Enjoy and thank you for your inquiry.
