Although any illness can cause stress on your body as a whole, I think a cough alone wouldn't hurt you too much. If you start to take any medications for the cough, that would have an effect though. I know that I can't take NyQuil or many other cold/flu meds without have GI upset later. Maybe just some rest and appropriate fluids would help. I know that tea is always soothing for me when I have a cough or chest congestion.
