I found this link about fiber on another bb that I peruse. A couple of statements stood out to me, be it because I misunderstood something or because it goes against what I thought was stated in Heather's book.
1.) It states that "Irritable bowel syndrome, if left untreated, may lead to diverticulosis of the colon."
I didn't think that IBS lead to any other diseases or disorders. I'm confused.
2.) And also "The down side of soluble fiber is that it can be metabolized by gas forming bacteria in the colon. These bacteria are harmless but for those who have an intestinal gas or flatus problem it is probably best to avoid or carefully test soluble fibers to see if they are contributing to intestinal gas."
Could my consumption of soluable fiber be contributing to the painful gas that I experience? I've been on a fiber supplement for at least a month, and my gas pains are still persistent. I was told that they will subside over time. I have very painful, sharp gas pains this afternoon -- it's alternates between throbbing, and sharp, with the constant feeling of pressure and fullness. I've only consumed 600 calories today (it's 4:15 p.m.) and I don't believe that I could put a scrap of food in me right now without bursting. This is starting to get ridiculous!
