Heather, I have put in a call to my doctor about this, but wanted your input on this. Several days ago, I started a new medication for something (unrelated to IBS). It's supposed to have very few side effects, but the first time I took it at night, I woke up with horrible flu symptoms. When I lifted my head up, I felt like I was going to throw up. My husband brought me some fat-free saltine crackers and a banana, and after I ate that, I gradually felt better. I read online that one of the rare side effects of this medicine is hyponatemia, which means you have too little sodium in the blood, and guess what? The tell-tale signs of this is flu-like symptoms! This is something that supposedly happens to marathan runners who drink a lot of water during their run. It's the opposite of dehyrdration, meaning you have too much water in your system and the blood gets diluted (if I'm understanding this correctly.) I am taking the fiber supplements and drinking water, but I'm not drinking an unusual amount. Incidentally, I also read that they recommend that marathon runners drink Gatorade instead of water and eat bananas to replenish the potassium levels in their body. (A woman died of this last year in a marathon, and another was hospitalized for it.) I have several questions: Have you ever heard of this? Would it have something to do with the way I'm eating/drinking now? Would it be related to the fiber supplement I'm using? (Benefiber) I had eaten salty foods before taking the medicine, but in the past two weeks I have had a colonscopy and CAT scan done (drank lots of the liquid beforehand and had dye in my veins.) I have IBS-C but have had diarrhea recently between the two tests and an anti-depressant I tried. Can you think of any reason I would experience this? I'm very puzzled by this.
