Hi Glenn and welcome, and first I would like to echo everyone else in saying that you are a great parent for supporting your son so well through this. I though it was tought getting sick at 17 yrs old, I can't even begin to imagine how horrible this must be for a 13 yr old. He is lucky you found out what was wrong and have found this site, alot of us got the run around from doctors before getting diagnosed (as you probably were too).
If he has problems on the weekend, and not during hte week, maybe you should focus your energy on that first? It is my problem area, too, cause duing the week I already have all my meals precooked, and whatever Ibring to work is what I eat, no ifs ands or buts, l perfectly planned and safe! Try planning out on Friday what he will eat this weekend. Leave space for 'fun' IBS safe foods, or eating out. Like, friday night I usually either go out for sushi (which I am sure he doesn't like ) or get a small pizza with no cheese, and broccoli on top (avoid this idea if he is still sensitive to all veggies or has a sensitivity to tomatos) make the Anti-depressant brownies as a project and share them. Of course it is not good to eat lots of sugar and junk frequently, but every once in awhile it doesn't hurt make a fruit smoothie or two, they taste like fruity milkshakes, YUM! And there are many varieties of choclate soymilk available, and strawberry is available at Trader Joes, if there is one by you. If you are going out for the day, have him bring lots of portable snacks, and check ahead to the area you will be in and where he may be able to eat. Alot of main chain restaurants have menus online. If it doens't sink in, though, he will eventually be sick of being sick, or have an embarassing situation that will turn him around and make him strict to the diet. I also commend you for showing him that he is not on a "weird diet" or has a handicap, just eating healthier to take care of himself, he can see that by you adopting the same eating habits. Hope I helped at all, I agree with what others have said, but wanted to add something different. To sum things up, structure is very important when starting out til you learn the ins and outs and can easily choose safe foods.
