Hello there~ What a great parent you are for helping your son with this!! I'm so sorry that you all have to go through this, but it really is so nice for us IBS-ers to have a strong support system.
I'm not going to jump in on the diet/meds discussion, because I think you've gotten some good advice already and I don't really have anything else to add. I've had IBS since I was 14, and that first year, I missed a LOT of school. It got to the point where I had to be home schooled in order to keep from failing the grade. If you haven't already, I would recommend talking with your son's teachers and school administrators about this. Let them know that he's having health issues, and that you'd like to keep him from falling behind. Helping him to stabalize as quickly and safely as possible is very important, or he will continue to miss out. Could you arrange to bring his homework home for him, or have a tutor in once a week (my school arranged for a teacher to stop by once a week to give me homework from my classes and to administer tests and such)? This may help all of you concentrate on getting him better, and help to ease some of the stress you're all feeling.
This is just my two-cents worth, and you may have already taken care of it. Again, I think it is really great that you are being so helpful for your son - he will sure thank you for it when he gets older!
