Hi there,
I just wanted to stick my nose in again to say that I disagree about whether or not prescription drugs are helpful in the treatment of IBS. I was on no medication, following the diet to the letter and living an otherwise healthy life - I was in agony for several months. Nothing I did diet/lifestyle wise was enough to give me relief from several IBS symtpoms.
I then tried several different medications, including prescription medications, Chinese herbal medications, over the counter medications and it took me almost a year to find what has finally gotten me stable.
I know there are A LOT of people with IBS who state that it is a COMBINATION of diet, excerise (and other lifestyle adjustments) _and_ medication that has helped them get to the point where they are stable.
Everything else, I agree with.
I would have your son stop having anything with dairy products, lactaid or not. I was told I was lactose intollerant and was drinking Lactaid milk and taking the pills but was still suffering. My best friend is the same, and she finally had a 'lactose intollerance' test at the specialist and was told she wasn't in fact intollerant to lactose, but that it was the IBS that caused her to not be able to have dairy products.

I think you are right to do what you feel is safest, and it's not always the best path to put someone so young on any type of medication. Surely, first changing the diet and things are the right way to go for you if it is helping. I'm not trying to tell you that you SHOULD have your doctor write you a prescription but I just wanted to explain that it in fact has given me relief and many other people I know, just so you are aware of your options.

Good luck! We'll be glad to answer any more questions you might have along the way.
