As your son's sounds like he has D and pain (correct me if I'm wrong, here!), steer well clear of insoluble fibre for a bit to give his system a break. If attacks are taking him out of school for 4 days at a time, he's obviously not very well at all(!), so play it careful, okay? So the only fruit and veg for him are the SF ones: applesauce, cooked carrots, bananas, mango, papaya, etc. They're in the list of SF foods.
IF is very important for health reasons, but you have to be VERY careful in a case like this. The only way I could get my symptoms to settle down was to have very little IF at all for quite a while. I now eat IF safely, but I needed that "break" to stabilise. Your son may well need that too.
