Hi,
As a lot of you know, I've been extremely stable for months now -- to the point that I barely even feel like I have IBS. I have been pretty faithful to the diet, but can get away with a little cheat here and there. I didn't do anything too out of the ordinary last night, and I had one of the worst attacks ever -- and I think it had been about 4 months since an attack. I'll give you a little background. Thursday night I had a cup of coffee -- something I can get away with every once in a while. I felt fine. I went out for Karaoke with my friends (my favorite thing) and had probably 3 beers in 4 hours. Felt fine. Friday morning I woke up and felt fine but was not hungry (I am usually starving as soon as I wake up). At about 2:30 I had a couple of graham crackers, and then had an Amy's Vegan Pot Pie. It has about 13g of fat, no dairy, etc. I'd never had one before. It was okay. A little while after that I got a little gurgly in the belly but nothing remarkable. I figured it was just because I hadn't eaten all day. Then at about 7 my friend and I went for sushi at a place we usually order in from. We were in the neighborhood so we just ate there instead. I had 2 steamed vegetable dumplings, split an order of edamame with her, and had a rainbow roll, which had cooked crab on the inside and salmon, avocado, and probably mackerel (something white) on the outside. It felt fine. I had a little bit of a Japanese Green Tea cold beverage in a can, no carbonation, no caffeine. I didn't like it very much so I had maybe half a can. I am not sensitive to tea at all can can have a cup of Lipton just about every morning. Well we sat and chatted for a few minutes after eating, then started walking home. When we were about 3 blocks from her building I felt an attack coming on, and we had to run the whole way back to her apartment. Thankfully she's been with me through all the IBS drama so it's not like I felt weird or anything. Anyway we got there and I made it to the bowl but then had NOTHING. Not even gas. Sat there for a while. Came out to the living room, and curled up on the floor for a while. Finally went back in and had the very worst D of my life. It was incredibly painful and ALL liquid. I really felt like I was peeing, but not. After having a normal BM every day for 4 months, I was so upset, diappointed, and frustrated. I remember having a reaction like this to sushi maybe 3 other times in my life, even before IBS. But, fish and rice are safe foods so I don't understand why they would be bad for IBS. Heather says in her books that it is safe. And I order sushi from this same place about 3 times a month and I've never had a problem. About 5 years ago I had food poisoning from raw oysters, and it was hell -- this was DEFINITELY not food poisoning, I can tell the difference. I had no fever or anything else like that, and felt totally fine an hour later. We even went out and I had a glass of wine with no problem.
So, any ideas? Do I need to cut out my very favorite food? Or could this just be non-IBS related?
Thanks,
Panda
