Hi, firstly I want to say how great it is that as a mother you are doing so much to help and support your son, that's wonderful!
I really feel for your son as will everyone else here. IBS can be a debilitating condition and quite honestly there doesn't seem to be a "usual" case of IBS as everyone is different. Having said that, there are many common things we can all do to help the situation. If you do a search using "new, new to the board" terms like that you'll come up with a lot of past posts that have links etc to lots of info that is good to read when getting started.
The main things to address are: 1.Diet - read up on all the info on this site 2.Take Soluble Fiber Supplements 3.Exercise daily - it really helps 4.Get plenty of sleep 5.Address stress, whether it be through yoga, relaxation, meditation, time out to yourself etc, etc (check the info on the yoga, hypnotherapy sites)
I hope this helps. Thank you for supporting your son so well.
Kerrie
