I was prescribed amitriptylin for IBS and to help me sleep, since a side effect of that drug is sleepiness. For some people, however, it can have the opposite effect. Perhaps you could talk to your doctor about lowering the dose to start off.

A low dose worked great for me. After a couple of years, however, I develped tachycardia from it and had to go off it. Darn! I loved the stuff.
