Jonsie, yes, smaller portion sizes should do the trick. And if you can get some exercise on a regular basis, even just walking, that will help too.
Hopefully as you get more stable, you'll be able to eat more fruits and veggies, because you need them for a healthy diet. There are safer ways to eat them, like in quick breads, smoothies and soups.
