Hi Steph,
I have not been diagnosed with IBS, but am/was suffering from the symptoms, so I've been reading a lot on these msg boards, and also following some of Heather's dietary guidelines. However, I went to an accupuncturist about 5 weeks ago now. I used to be plagued by constipation pretty much for as long as I remember. And guess what... I have been having daily bm for the past 3-4 weeks!! I've never felt better! He's doing accu for my constipation, to make things flow, and I am also taking a bunch of Chinese herbal remedies, one of them is called smooth response (very nasty tasting), but these things I'm only supposed to take for a certain amount of time, until all is fixed. I do have an open mind for this stuff, but at the same time I am very sceptical about it all, however, I have to admit that it all seems to be working. The reason why you'd need to take a lot of the chinese herbal remedies, is because it's all not very strong, and it shouldn't be permanent either.
Last week my dr started allergy testing, it's a method called N.A.E.T., where he tests me for certain things, and then if I respond to it, he does some accupressure, while I hold the allergen in my hand, and then I have to stay off of it for 24 hours, and that fixes you permanently. Again, I'll believe it when I see it, although I have to say, so far, it's been working.
So, bottom line, I am becoming a strong believer in accupuncture and TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine), luckily, my dr is covered by my insurance, and every visit is $25. For me, that investment is worth it because I've been feeling unhappy and in pain for way too long now, and it is working, so again, for me, personally it's worth it. Do you have any kind of medical insurance? Because even though accupuncture itself may not be covered, if you find a chiropractor who does accu also (which is what my dr is), they might have a deal worked out with the insurance company, where your copay is not much.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
