Ruchie,

Good for you! Jumping rope is a great way to exercise, but I agree that you need to be aware of the impact on your joints. Not only the knee, but ankles as well (I have very bad ankles and doctors and physios are recommending surgery on both - eek!) Anyway, a good running shoe that absorbs alot of impact like New Balance will help out here.

As for the amount of time, it depends on your cardio health. Try continually jumping rope for a few minutes and gradually work your way up. If you do this several times a week, you should be up at 10 minutes of CONTINUOUS jumping after several weeks.
