Hi All
This website has been a godsent!
I was diagnosed with IBS as a teenager. My symptoms are mainly cramping and diarrhea, mostly triggered by rich foods and dairy products. I've learned to live with it mainly be taking a lactase enzyme before consuming dairy and an anti-diarrheal (loperamide hydrochloride) after an attack. I do limit my activities to those where I can easily find a bathroom. I was unaware of the new research, medications and especially that there were dietary guidelines that would decrease my discomfort.
In an attempt to lose weight, I started the South Beach Diet about a month ago. I followed the diet pretty carefully and I did lose weight. But, about two weeks ago, I started experiencing painful cramping, gas and bloating. I never attributed these symptoms to IBS. It was so bad that I thought I must have colitis or some terrible ailment. I went to the doctor and he said it was just the change of diet and prescribed Pepcid. He said to continue with the South Beach Diet as it was healthy and it was helping me to lose weight.
I tried the Pepcid and it didn't work. So desparate, I did an internet search and discovered this website. Within minutes I realize that the South Beach Diet and the dietary guidelines for IBS are almost exactly opposite . In an effort to lose weight, I had practically eliminated soluable fiber and replaced it with insoluble fiber and low fat dairy.
I realize that if you are on these boards you are already aware of how to manage your IBS, and one look at the South Beach Diet would have sent warning signals to avoid this diet. I just think that there are probably others with IBS like me that are just plain unaware that the South Beach Diet might make their symptoms worse.
Anyway.....Heather a great BIG thank you! I just ordered the book, caps and fiber supplement. You know, one of my dreams has been to go to Europe but I never thought I could swing it cuz of the IBS. Now, maybe there is hope!
