Irritable Bowel Syndrome Message Boards

I have a question that I've been unable to answer in my research on the internet and I was hoping you would have an answer. I hesitated to even post this because I don't want to contribute to anyone's fears (rational or irrational) regarding fructose.

I was wondering if it is possible to have a false negative on the breath test. I had the lactose intolerance test a few years ago and the results were fine, however I cannot tolerate any dairy in even a minute amount. I suspect that I'm one of the "methane producers" and that's why I got a false negative on the test.

I had the fructose test in November or December and the results were fine on that as well. However, I'm still noticing symptoms when I consume fructose, especially more than one fructose containing food in one day. Is it possible that some fructose malabsorbers produce a gas other than hydrogen?

Also, the when consuming the fructose solution for the test you ingest 25 grams, correct? What would the equivalent of 25 grams be in food? 1 apple? 2 apples?

Any insight you have would be appreciated!!
