can a topical medication cause or aggrevate IBS symptoms?

Hi all,

I recently started a topical ointment called Ziana for a skin complaint. I noticed that this medication contains clindamycin (1.2%). Reading over the leaflet, this particular drug -- like any antibiotic I suppose -- is sometimes associated with GI symptoms.

I have indeed had some increased IBS symptoms since starting the topical, but this recent period has also coincided with discontinuing the antidepressant I had been taking for 1.5 yrs. Coming off of an antidepressant typically causes increased IBS symptoms for me, so I suspect this is the issue.

But I was just curious how common it is for a topical ointment (containing an antibiotic) to cause increased IBS symptoms?

I'm trying to weigh whether it's worth discontinuing this ointment for a while.

Thanks for any comments!

Chris
