Irritable Bowel Syndrome Message Boards | Re: I'm guessing I have IBS now

Hi Shreela, welcome to the boards! I'm far from an expert so I'll just throw out the little bits I know or offer some suggestions.

One of my friends (and several of her family members) have Celiac disease. My friend has told me that it is necessary to have been eating gluten at the time you're tested for Celiac, otherwise the test will likely be negative whether you have it or not, because the test is looking for your body's response to having eaten gluten.

My understanding from what I've read on this site and from my GI doctor is that diagnosing IBS is a combination of ruling out a lot of other things, and having certain symptoms. There is no single test to tell you for sure that you have IBS. I don't know at what point a good doctor actually decides it is IBS. I'm actually still waiting on a final diagnosis from my doctor after more test results come back.

Assuming you do have IBS and/or that this diet is helping whatever your problem is, that meal you mention sounds like quite a whopper. Beans cause gas, red meat is something to avoid according to the EFI diet, and if you ate a lot of those cruciferous veggies that could have been a problem too.

Have you considered or talked to your doctor about the possibility of having acid reflux and/or lactose intolerance?
