Erilyn,
I'm sorry but I don't agree with pretty much all of what you've written here. If it were as simple as boosting levels of serotonin (and/or noradrenalin) in the brain, why don't A/D's work for everyone?

And how can you claim that someone who's suffered a major bout of depression for say, 6 months, is not "chemically depressed"? What are they suffering from then? How long and how severe does the depressive episode have to be to be "chemical" in nature? It doesn't add up.

I think you'll find that if you dig a little deeper into the biological aspect of things that there are many types of neurological receptors, messaging agents, and so on. For example, read posts like http://dr-bob.org/babble/20080221/msgs/814891.html. It really isn't that simple at all.
