New to all of this

Hi there,

I am fairly new to all of this. I was diagnosed with IBS-C, GERD and an autoimmune disorder-NOS (meaning they don't know what is wrong, but I have some sort of autoimmune disorder that manifests itself with skin inflammation and joint pain) almost 10 years ago. No one gave me any real information at that time and I just sort of muddled my way through. I did find that I did better if I took wheat out of my diet.

Then I went through some difficulty with infertility. I was blessed to have two beautiful boys who are now 2 and 4. Unfortunately my older son had a lot of medical/feeding issues. He was diagnosed with FPIES (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) to soy and dairy. He didn't get the diagnosis until he was two years of age and needed an NG feeding tube for a bit. So our focus needed to be on the two boys, not on me.

I am happy to report that although both of my boys have this syndrome they are doing well. We have tailored their diets (and ours) to meet their needs. They have both been discharged from feeding therapy and Early Intervention services. It has been a whirlwind and a struggle the past two years, but we are finally on top of it.

Remarkably, while I was pregnant and nursing (a total of four years) I was super healthy with no signs or symptoms of GI upset. Due to my older son's diagnosis, the team at Children's had me nurse my younger son and exclude soy, wheat, dairy, nuts, fish, caffeine. Now that it has been 10 months since I stopped nursing my youngest son I find that all of the symptoms are back. The constipation, the bloating beyond belief, reflux pain and gas.

I saw my GI team and they ran a batch of tests. Gave me the same diagnoses as before and sent me on my way. Thankfully I found this website, have been able to read a lot of the information on here and have started to read Heather's books.

I am now focusing on my own needs and I also wonder if there is a connection between all of my "stuff" and that of my sons. I have seen an acupuncturist in the past and I am going to try and see her again along with a naturopath doctor.

All of you have helped me already and most likely don't even know it! Your stories are encouraging, and the information is so helpful.

Do any of you have any suggestions about the wheat? I am wondering if it is okay to use oat flour and rice flour in place of the wheat flour. I have read the message boards about gluten free foods, but thankfully I can (or think I can) eat oats, barley, and millet without issue.

Any suggestions about the SFS? I am taking Benefiber, but wasn't aware until I read this that the ingredients changed to include wheat dextrin. I have to say that I have taken it so far and it has helped a lot. I am going to order the acacia and the fennel tea as well.

Really, this is just to say thanks for this being here! It is a godsend!!!

Beth
