That's a tough one, a situation I know well (as I have IBS-C). Can you tolerate apple peel? The pectin is supposed to help peristalsis, all the muscle contractions that move food and waste thru the body. I can't handle it, myself, right now. You could try aloe vera juice, prune or plum juice (a cup before bed); papaya, mango, melons... all good, if you can tolerate them. Watch the papaya... half of one is usually ok; a whole one would cause D. And lots of water. Nothing will move without it. Some physical activity should help, too.
I know how uncomfortable you are, and I sympathize with all my being. If it lasts too long, SEE YOUR DR. You don't want to become impacted. If you decide to try a laxative, use a non-stimulant type, but these are only safe for very short-term use. I've read very good things about MiraLax, which used to be prescription-only but can now be purchased OTC at many stores, like Wal-Mart.
Do you use a stool softener? I take 500mgs/day, even with all the fiber and water. I just can't seem to be soft enuf without it, but you say you're soft? If so, then I'd just try some legumes or fruit... what foods work well for some don't for others. It's a real trial-and-error thing (which is part of why it's so frustrating). Thick-skinned fruit isn't supposed to be good for IBS, yet fresh cherries work like magic for me. Unfortunately, we all have to find our own Special Recipe for healthy, easy BMs.
I'd stay away from the bran and dairy, tho. Dairy constipates, and bran is just too potent for an IBSer (unless your body can handle it).
best of luck! hugs
