I was just tested, and found to have low levels. After doing some web searches, I learned that low levels of Vitamin D can even cause IBS. Here's a comprehensive article:
http://www.womentowomen.com/nutritionandweightloss/vitamind.aspx
I have started on a high dose of Vitamin D, 50,000 IU once a week for 2 months to bring my levels up into the normal range.
If you read the article, you'll learn how Vit D really contributes to how our bodies function. A much higher level is needed than the minimum daily requirement (the lowest level needed just to prevent rickets). Vit D regulates calcium absorption (prevents osteoporosis), regulates the immune system. I am a "classic" example because I developed auto-immune disease (Sjogren's Syndrome), osteopenia, hypothyroidism, IBS, food sensitivities---all occurred or got more severe in the last 7 years, and all these are associated with low Vit. D levels.
There is a simple blood test for Vit D levels--if you're going to get blood drawn at your next doctor's appointment---ask them to add this test.
