Well, Here Goes!

I was diagnosed with D-predominant IBS about 25 years ago. However, I've had a tremendous exacerbation of my symptoms in the last 6 months-maybe due to increased stress (I don't know). Anyhow, I had a CT scan of the abdomen a week ago which came back negative. So it did absolutely nothing for me other than give me another D-attack due to that awful contrast solution I had to drink. And my GI doesn't seem to be in a hurry to do much of anything else for me.

Well, on to the diet. I became aware of Heather's diet about 2 or 3 years ago. At the time, I was just like "this is WAY too restrictive!". So I figured I wouldn't follow it unless I was having a flare up. When I did, I would go on the rice and plain bread thing for a couple days, and would usually get better until next time. However, after 6 straight days of D, including an embarrassing attack during the middle of a church service yesterday, I decided that it is time to make the commitment to this because I can't go on living my life this way, and basically feel like I'm at the end of my rope. You all know how it is.

My questions on diet are: 1. What about apple and grape juices? I haven't seen them specifically mentioned in the materials I've read so far. In the past, I heard that apple juice can be soothing because it is mild and bland, etc. But I recently also heard to stay away from it because it can aggravate diarrhea. I know apple sauce is fine, but what about juice? 2. Would it be OK to have a little bit of the pure fruit preserves (no added sugar) such as strawberry to liven up my toast or oatmeal a little? I'm not a big oatmeal fan-just eating it because of the soluble fiber. I'm used to having things drenched in butter and am just wondering what I can substitute to give the foods some flavor. Thanks, Amy
