Hi,
Your story about developing IBS is similar in some respects to my son (age 10). He had a terrible case of gastroenteritis last spring. It was going around at the time, and others had a similar sickness. My son was very sick for several weeks. He did recover from the acute illness, but since developed IBS-D. When he gets a bout of IBS it is really similar to the GI flu he had in the spring. (He was also recently diagnosed as fructose intolerant too). The doctor did say many IBS patients start having symptoms after a viral infection.

I wonder if something in the lining of the intestine is damaged by the virus.

I do wonder, too, if my son has an overgrowth of yeast (after all the D from IBS and the flu, the good and bad bacteria get eliminated). But how do I deal with that when his GI system is so sensitive?

Sorry I don't have answers, but maybe we eventually will!
