Well, for 2 weeks now I have been doing the following and I think it's really starting to help! First off, I am IBS c. I never have d. Here's what I have done to get rid of the terrible pain and help expel gas, and most importantly, get my bowel movements regular and soft...
1. Eating 20 grams of fiber a day, made up of oatmeal, potatoes, fiberchoice tablets(3 a day, but only WITH a form of soluble fiber, such as when I eat my oatmeal twice a day)carrots, salmon with spinach and rice, skinless chicken with steamed veggies. These have been my staples. I keep my fat intake VERY low and my fiber spread out throughout the day. It took me 2 weeks to get used to upping my fiber to 20 grams, and that's not even the 25 I'm supposed to be at, but I'll up it to 25 over the next 2 weeks. Gotta add that fiber slowly or the gas is a killer! Important note: I have found that eating very small meals every hour is the best for me!
2. Taking enteric coated peppermint tablets a half hour before I eat. Also Taking a multi-digestive enzyme with my meals, a calcium/magnesium(more mag than cal, important for those with ibs c)everyday, b-complex vitamin(1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night to prevent nausea) beano before anything "gassy" and gas x(6 throughout the day, okayed by my dr.) I've also upped my water consumption to 55 ounces a day(spread out from 6 am to 7 pm) along with a half glass of prune juice at night.
3. Deeeeeeeeep breathing and laying down for at least a half hour everyday on my left side to expel any trapped gas I might have(I usually do this when I get home from work, it helps me sleep through the night with less gas somehow). Hot baths at least once a day to relax. 30 minutes of walking(15 after breakfast and 15 after dinner)
I now know that I was definitely not eating enough fiber in my diet at all! Being diagnosed with IBS has been a real bummer and when I'm in an episode, it's bad! But, I feel like on a positive note, being diagnosed has also helped me to eat better and therefore feel better! Anyways, I just wanted to share what has helped this IBSer C for now. I pray it lasts and continues on!!!!!!!
