Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to make you aware of a new DVD that Gaiam has released. They apparently have teamed up with the Mayo Clinic to produce a series of DVDs focused on chronic conditions. IBS is one of them. Here's how they describe it:

"Each DVD features integrated health action plans. The DVD program beings with an "informative 30-minute conversation with Mayo Clinic Specialists.

Next, experienced Mayo Clinic Dietitians teach you what to eat and what to avoid with respect to your condition.

Finally, yoga expert Rodney Yee guides you through condition-specific relaxation poses and meditation exercises designed to help relive tension and enhance circulation.

Each DVD includes a 52-page stress management workbook. Total running time 90 minutes."

Here is the link to check it out:
http://www.gaiam.com/product/media-library/wellness-dvds/alternative-therapies/mayo+clinic+wellness+solutions+for+i.b.s..do

I have not bought or used this DVD yet so I cannot comment on it's contents or it's effectiveness - in fact as we have all learned over the years, many doctors, dietitians, etc, who do not have IBS give advice on how to deal with IBS and it is often contradictory to what you know is safe for you. I think that having tools to help manage IBS symptoms is important, but I also think that not every tool is right for everybody.

Even though we all "have" IBS we are all individuals and what works for me or Heather or you might be very different. I know how powerful and healing yoga has been for me. I also know that I cannot use peppermint capsules. Peppermint tea, yes - I love it, but the capsules not so much. It's like that with DVDs or any other advice you get. Try it for yourself and see what works for you!

I guess what I'm saying is trust your instincts and intuition. If you get this or any other DVD and you totally dig it, then great. If not, then keep exploring until you find what works for you. Ultimately, we all have to be proactive in our healing. Nobody knows better than you do how something "feels" in your body. Listen to the wisdom that's already inside of you.

If you do get the DVD and have any feedback, please let us know. I am going to order it just so I can check it out, I will let you know what I think.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2008.

Peace,

KK

I just got this DVD and while the diet portion is not exactly on point the Yoga segment is awesome. I have taken a beginner I and II class at a studio near my home but this DVD has over 40 minutes of yoga just for IBS and it is NOT hard. I too am extremely unflexible and I have scoliosis so I have to be careful with inverted positions. Downward facing dog is the only real "inverted" position and it is OK for me. I really like the DVD. Thanks for the tip.

I am new to yoga and was looking to include something more that would help improve my ibs. I have the hypno cds and follow the diet. So I ordered this dvd having only tried one other yoga dvd for extreme beginners before which was probably closer to holding stretches. I sat down to watch the yoga segment and I thought he was moving really fast. Now this is coming from someone who has never taken a class, keep trying to sign up but one thing or another comes up. Is this how yoga classes move? Is that a normal pace and because I am new it seems fast? I am sending it back and will continue to try and fit in a beginner class somewhere. I think this is a good dvd if you are not new to yoga, that opinion from someone who knows nothing about yoga.

I have this DVD and had a chance to use it yesterday. I had an issue on Monday and decided to skip my morning run on Tuesday and do the Yoga instead.

I liked it, seemed to help a bit.

I've done Yoga for a few years, typically the harder, more 'Power Yoga' style of things. I really enjoy it so the movements in this DVD felt very easy for me. Nothing was extraordinary or very 'stretchy'. I think the hardest move that was done was probably Plank to Cobra. And that's not very difficult after the first few times you do it (it's a push-up like motion so your arms get a little workout).

The pace - a lot of Yoga routines do seem to move fast at first. After you get the hang of things though, it gets easier. For instance - if you don't know what Downward Facing Dog is, you'll be watching to figure out what move they are doing. By the time you start doing it, they're moving onto the next position. Movements are repeated frequently though so you'll get used to it quick.

I plan on doing this 2 - 3 times a week and seeing how it helps. Worse case scenario, I'll wake up better in the morning:)

Can't say I found much interest in the commentary or the stress booklet. I'll probably show it to my wife though so she has a bit more of an idea of what the issue is (luckily she's been happy to read up on those things too).

Hope this helps. Oh, first post for me. Woohoo or something like that :-P

Hi KK,
First, thankyou for your info on gentle yoga and how to find it. Also, I totally agree with you that we should be wary - even if it IS the Mayo clinic - of any advice from doctors because IBS is so misunderstood by so many doctors, even those who are gastroenteritis specialists.

I am older than all of you and not one doctor ever gave me the right advice. My family doctor in Charlottesville was always telling me that more fiber would help, but I of course got worse because fiber has to be added slowly and added with bread or pasta or rice. Everytime I went on a protein and vegetable diet I would have an attack of stomach pain similar to ulcers.

Since using Heather's book, recipes and methods, I am so much better. Now I tell my doctor what I can and can't eat and he listens.

By the way I have added an enzyme pill (Omnigest from Walmart) that I take with most meals (not breakfast because nothing at breakfast hurts me) and it helps with gas and bloating. I was watching Oprah and some woman in the audience asked a visiting doctor why she couldn't eat certain things and the doctor said after 55, we lose certain digestive enzymes. Since then I use the enzyme and it helps. (REMEMBER- NOTHING IS A CURE.)Just thought I would pass it on. I am not an advocate for any enzyme and I hardly know what I m taking, but it's harmless and it works for me and it might work for you.

Thanks the info. I may buy the DVD when and if i can find some extra cash. With four kids, the start of the new school year leaves me strapped. In the meanwhile, I'll continue with the Yoga I know and the ballroom dancing I teach (great stress reliever!)
Also, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who can't handle the peppermint caps but can do the tea. The caps make my gas and pain worse it seems. But a cup of peppermint tea, maybe a hot pad and some good stretches to the trick!
I'd love to talk with you more... and thanks again.
Dana
