Yes? Most yoga is not cardio... to get the cardio, you need to get your heart rate up for an extended period of time. You can try some yoga postures before and after your cardio to stretch and to calm down. I'd try meditation too, at night before bed (try not to fall asleep doing it!!) and that would def help calm your mind and ease your stress.

Besed on what little I know about you from these posts, if you came to me as a student the first thing I'd do is ask you, "What do you want?" What is it you're trying to achieve from your exercise/practice? Don't just say Health" or something general like that, consider the question and try to work out what is your PRIORITY right now? What one thing, if you could achieve or "move towards" it, would bring the greatest benefit in your life?

The reason I would ask you to be specific and choose one thing is that many of these things, as you are finding out, conflict with each other or at the very least are comnpeting for your time. So you want cardio, you want core strength, you want flexibility, you want relaxation, and probably a dozen other things too - I assume since you're on this list you suffer from IBS or similar and relief from symptoms/suffering is going to be high on your list. But which of these is really going to help the most?

Then I would develop an individual practice for you that worked towards achieving this priority. That's not to say the other wants won't be covered to some level or another - doing a yoga practice for one reason or another always brings "side effect" improvements in others too. But if you focus your efforts on the one thing that will help the most, you'll rapidly get progress. This progress will help motivate you, and as you reach towards your goal then other aspects will then become the priorities and you can change your practice towards them (e.g. as you relax more and your IBS symptoms alleviate, then you decide to improve your cardio).

So that would be my advice - determine your priorities and focus on one thing to start with. The others can come along later.

Hope this helps,

Scott

I LOVE yoga! It has many, many benefits. The best advise for any new yogi is find a class. Doing the exercises incorrectly can cause you harm and/or waist your time. Most gyms have classes i.e. worlds, golds. Body flow classes are great for beginners to advanced. These classes include yoga, pilates, and Tae chi. Classes that include these will help answer your question. Once you have some experience, practicing at home can be very helpful for IBS. As for cardio, I do that after a bodyflow or pilates class. Welcome to the wonderful world of yoga! [af]
