This post isn't really about eating or diet, but I knew this would be a place I could talk about something important to me. Over the weekend we took our daughter to a farm animal sanctuary near our home (Peaceful Prairie). What an incredible experience!! We got to walk among the cows, chickens, goats, turkeys, sheep... you name it!! I never knew how friendly and affectionate goats and turkeys, especially, are. They would come right up to us and rub against our legs, just like a dog or cat would, asking to be petted!! After sharing a few wonderful hours with these amazing animals, it really reinforced my belief in a vegan diet. I couldn't look those animals in the eye and then return home to drink milk or eat a chicken breast like nothing ever happened. I don't know how people do that, compartmentalize things like that.

Anyway, I would encourage all of you to seek out sanctuaries like Peaceful Prairie that are near your home, and go visit! My 17 month old just thought everything with fur was a "puppy", but she still had a great time.

I know where you are coming from. I watched the video, I Am An Animal, by Ingrid Newkirk. They profile a turkey that they rescue, who is in pretty bad shape. Ingrid takes this turkey (just a stupid turkey, right?) to a calm, quiet room, a pallet to rest upon, soothing music, and lots of tranquility. The turkey responds to this peace and kindness. I just cried.

Pigs are especially great little creatures. They will also rub your hands to be petted.

It is great to expose your young daughter to the beautifulness and love that comes from these creatures.

Oh, I could never watch things like that, I'd be crying buckets!!! Good for you to expose yourself to those things, though. Seeing the turkeys at the sanctuary was especially troubling. Two of them had been rescued and they just looked miserable. Turkeys simply aren't meant to be half the size of these turkeys. The hormones and other crap they are pumped full of cause them to literally outgrow their own bodies. Their feathers were falling out, they had sores on their skin, they had a hard time supporting their own weight - and yet all they wanted was affection. It was heartbreaking.

I hope my daughter inherits my love of all animals
