Smart Balance Buttery spread OK?

Hi All
Was going to make the Gingerbread Muffins when I realized that I don't have any soy margarine.
Is Smart Balance OK to use? Smart Balance is a butery spread that is supposed to help cholesterol. I couldn't find any dairy in it.
Ingredients are: natural oil blend (palm, fruit, soybean, canola seed and olive oils), water, contains less than 2% salt, whey, vegetable monoglycerides and sorbitan ester of fatty acids (emulsifiers), soybean lechitin, potassium sorbate, lactic acid (to protect freshness), natural and artificial flavor, vitamin E, calcium disodium EDTA, vitamin Apalmitate, beta-carotene color.
The nearest Whole Food (health food store) is half an hour a way, so it would be great if I could use Smart Balance instead.

Whey = dairy, so right off that looks like a no-no to me.

I use the version of smart balance that is lactose free. no whey and has no trans fat, it is a the light version.
Smart balance light. It is also non- hydrogenated and I use it every day it has 0g of fat. Read the labels carefully.
This is so good it taste like real butter but it's not.
The buttery spread version has whey an is not lactose free.
Also has other bad junk like sorbitol. Hope this helps.

Yea it's in a tub, I get it at my local grocery store. I discovered it about a month ago after standing there reading every kind there was, for about 20 minutes. My hubby and kids, well to say the least weren't happy, but I was  If you find it, try it. Remember not everyone reacts the same to foods, but I swear I'm doing fine with it and I'm D proned so I watch everything I eat.

It's non-hydrogenated and has no fat?? This sounds too good to be true. I'll have to check it out.

Surprise, surprise! Smart Balance IS non-hydrogenated! BUT, while it's a tiny bit lower in calories than Soy Garden (Smart Balance has 80 calories; Soy Garden has 100), neither are fat-free, not by a long-shot.
I think it comes down to taste. To me, there's no comparison; Soy Garden is SOOOO much more like real butter than Smart Balance. Even though I have to go to a health food store to get it, it's worth it!

I use this too -- whenever I do use anything. Here is some info about it:
Smart Balance 37% Light Buttery Spread
This delicious light 37% buttery spread contains similar health benefits as the 67% buttery spread but, being lower in fat, can only be used for light frying, sautéing and table use. It is not recommended for baking. However, Smart Balance Light is an outstanding spread. It contains no hydrogenated oil, no trans fatty acids and a precisely balanced oil blend to help improve the cholesterol ratio.
Smart Balance Light contains no dairy ingredients and is lactose free.
It isn't fat free -- it has 5 grams of fat per 1Tbsp & 45 cals

So what is lactic acid? I always thought that had something to do with lactose. Anyone know what this is?

Steph, here's what my dairy-free cookbook says about lactic acid:
Lactic acid does not generally contain lactose. It is used extensively to control acidity and as a preservative or flavoring for processed foods. Main sources are cornstarch, molasses, glucose, and sometimes whey.
My question is, how do we know when it's made from whey and when it's not? I never thought about it before.

You hit a good question. Thing only thing to do is call the company and find out if it is from a plant source or not.

Unless they would lie -- and then asking them wouldn't do any good. I can't tolerate even small amounts of dairy -- but this has never caused me troubles. I was happy to find it since soy garden is not sold in my healthfood store.

Well good! I'm sure you're right, and if it was made from whey they definitely wouldn't be able to call it "dairy-free". But if we ever come across some product that doesn't specify I guess that's when we need to wonder...

the regular does have whey in it -- they made this one different on pupose -- so I think it's safe.... as safe as you can claim anything is.
