I am so NOT a cook but I really would like to make some burgers that I can eat. However, I was looking on the recipe exchange at some of the yummy burger recipes and for one reason or another I couldn't have each one so I came up with a sort of recipe that I was hoping someone could review and either tweek or let me know if it will totally suck in taste or just plain not work at all. Here it is: (no laughing)

1-2 cans Chickpeas or 1 package of firm Tofu ( I would prefer tofu as I have a slight aversion to chickpeas since I'm pregnant)
breadcrumbs
1/2 cup carrots
1/4 cup onions
3 cups mushrooms
spices (salt and pepper)

in a food processor combine chickpeas/tofu and boiled carrots and blend until it's a paste

saute onions and mushrooms with Pam in a skillet then add to the food processor, processing until they're in tiny bits (I can handle onions if they are very small)

add breadcrumbs and shape into patties, cook in skillet with pam.

Serve in a pita with mayo and mustard or whatever.

Hopefully they taste like food? So what do you think?

I think an egg white as a binder would help. And you might need to go heavy on seasoning when using tofu IMO. Cooking Light has a terrific chick pea pattie recipe- just make less spicy as desired. They are very meaty.

Well, I made them last night and I have to say that since I haven't had a burger in over 4 years, they were pretty darn good! I made them very thin so they weren't soft in the middle and ate them with a pita, smart beat mayo, yellow mustard and my staple...lots of salt. Also, I added turmeric and onion powder to the recipe and ate them with oven fries. Pretty good meal for me. Emmasmom, thanks for the tip but I'm a hair away from being vegetarian so chicken is out for me. I still eat egg whites but unless I can find someone locally that raises chickens I will be cutting the egg whites out too and becoming completely vegan.
