Butter Substitute

Another newbie with another question! 
I have been following the diet for sometime and have decided to venture out and change some of grandma's recipes so I can still enjoy them.
My question is: what can I use as a butter substitute? Would Canola oil work ok? If so, would I substitute equal amounts or a lager or lesser amount?

Depending on the recipe you can use canola oil, stick margarine or apple sauce. The first two still have as much fat as butter so be very careful. Look at some of the recipes here in the index to get subsitution ideas.

If you use oil instead of butter, you would use 7/8ths as much so it's not oily. Since that's a little hard to figure out, I just use slightly less.
If the recipe calls for more than a tiny bit of butter, I would use half oil/half applesauce or half oil/half milk substitute of choice, depending on the recipe.
