In Heather's late October Newsletter she gave the recipe for Chicken and Dumplings. One of the ingredients listed is Savory. It's also listed in several recipes in her books. What is it? I've never heard of it, can't find it in any stores around me, and my friends and family have never heard of it. And, assuming I can't get it in my area, could another spice/seasoning be substituted for it? Thanks for any info!

From www.foodsubs.com:

savory Notes: This herb has a strong, peppery flavor, and it's often used in Mediterranean countries to flavor beans, mushrooms, vegetables, and meats. There are two varieties: winter savory and the milder summer savory. Winter savory is best suited to slowly cooked dishes like stews. Substitutes: thyme (stronger flavor) OR thyme + dash of sage or mint

I ordered mine from www.americanspice.com: Savory Ground
