Hey all

You've advised me before on stock pots, and I've decided I need one (as I loved the lemon rice pudding, but it expploded all over my oven...). There are loads on ebay, but all have different capacities - anybody any idea how many litres I want ideally?

I just want to make rice pudding, and do other stock pot IBS recipes, without overflowing from my biggest saucepan!

Thanks all

I say..... are you English, perchance?

What the heck is a stock pot? It sounds like you might be referring to either a Dutch oven or a crock pot.

Litres?! What's that?

Well, I have a Dutch oven AND a crock pot. They're both GIGANTIC. If you entertain a lot, then go for the larger size. Also, the crock pot itself lifts out so it's much easier to clean.

However, you're supposed to make sure the crock pot is at least half full, which I can't do on many occasions. I had a smaller crock pot but gave it away, like an idiot.

The larger pot is excellent for making soups and spaghetti sauce, but when I want to do tournadoes, it's WAYYY too big. If you can find a sale on 'em, I'd go for both the larger and the smaller sizes.

LOVE my Dutch oven; I use it much more often than the crock pot.

We did a kind of survey awhile back in which we talked about our crock pot preferences. Here's the first post in the thread, but be sure to read all the responses: web page

Lemon pudding and rice pudding, you say? Not steak and kidney pudding? Ew.

She means stock pot alright- Heather mentions it in Eating for IBS, but it's the only recipe I've seen that calls for it. I've never heard of a dutch oven over here

For Will's Lemon rice pudding it's a stock pot you need which is basically the biggest saucepan you can buy- think the one you boil the ham in at Christmas, that should do nicely, check out your local Tescos for one, they will probably have them in again for Easter. Argos have a nice cheap one too here. it's 7.3 litres which is huge.

For the other stuff like stews and soups, it's a crockpot (slow cooker) that is usually mentioned in recipes. Check out Argos again. They have crockpots, our parents called them "Slow cookers" and got them as wedding presents but nobody over here seems to use them anymore!

Happy shopping!

Bevvy,

A stock pot is the biggest pot that comes in a set. The one we would make a pot of soup in...so it is tall and shaped like a cylinder. A dutch oven is more like what you would bake a roast in right?

I thought that thing was a pasta cooker 'cause it has a strainer in it. It's gigantic! I've never used it for anything but pasta. It looks nice sitting on top of my hanging pot rack, but I do have to take it down occasionally to dust it off.

"Stock pot," eh? Well, I still wouldn't use it for sauces or soups; it's just WAAAAAY too big. "Stock pot." Huh! Live and learn....
