I doubt it's for the baking soda -- I bet it's just to off-set the sugar/chocolate. I wonder why the soda is in there -- I've never seen it other angel food cake recipes. I wonder if it's added to give it some extra help because of the chocolate potentially weighing it down?? I'm gonna have to go dig out "The Cake Bible" and see if RLB has anything sage to say about extra leavening in angel food cake.

That means that Duncan Hines Angel Food Cake may still be safe AND my grocery store may not, if fact, be about to go out of business.

I'll keep my fingers crossed about the Duncan Hines - let us know what you find out.
