I'm new to IBS and to the IBS community. I have a recipe that is a family holiday favorite and was hoping for some help from those of you who have more experience regarding the IBS diet. Any assistance is greatly appreciated as this is one recipe that I will hate to miss out on this holiday.

Here is the recipe in it's original, non-IBS form:

Horns-Of-Plenty

2 cups flour
1 tbsp sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
3/4 cup butter

Mix all together like pie crust.

1 pkg. fresh yeast dissolved in 5 tbsp. warm water
2 egg yolks, beaten

Mix together. Then mix first mixture with second mixture lightly with a fork.

Filling -

2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
1/2 cup sugar, added to egg whites while beating
Cinnamon
Chopped pecans

Form dough into a ball; divide ball into 4 equal parts. Roll 1 part at a time on well-floured surface to form a 9 inch circle. Spread with 1/4 of the egg white mixture. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nuts. Cut into 8 pie-shaped wedges. Roll as for butterhorns, starting at the wide end. Repeat with other 3 parts of dough. Bake on cookie sheets at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Frost while warm.

Frosting -

1 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp. hot water
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Beat together and drizzle over horns. Additional hot water may be added to attain desired consistency. Makes 32 horns.

I have to ask what this recipe is, before I make any suggestions. Are they cookies? Or are they more like a sweet roll of some kind?

If they're cookies, sadly, they can't be made IBS-safe, because cookies need the fat for texture... trying to substitute would completely ruin them.

However, if they're more like a roll, which I'm thinking they are with a yeast dough, then you can substitute a different kind of dough altogether - like a sweet bread dough - because the filling and icing, as long as you go easy on the pecans, are safe as they are.

Hey, Michelle!

That is so cool that your user name is Michelle M.

My full name is Michelle Marie Merchant (MMM).

Welcome and look forward to chatting with ya! I'm sure people will have us all confused before it's all over!! LOL!! Fortunately for both of us, I used my maiden name as my user name. My maiden name is Michelle Anliker.

Thank you for your reply, Casey. Yes, this recipe is more like a cinnamon roll only not as gooey. Do you have a particular yeast dough recipe that you recommend?

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your welcome and sharing the fun with your name. My middle name is Ann so my full initials would spell MAM. I just couldn't go there so I decided on MM. I've gotten a lot of questions like, "Does it stand for Marilyn Monroe" but I think it would be less than I would get from MAM. I have never heard of someone with three M's, though...very cool!

I found this recipe in the recipe index - use the first 8 ingredients, cutting the amounts in half, and omitting the almond extract if desired.

In that same discussion thread, there's also a recipe for "Quick Sticky Buns", that just uses store-bought reduced fat crescent rolls, the kind you buy in a can and bake. If you can find them, and you want to make less work for yourself, definitely try that.
