I found a chicken mushroom today! I had one once before, it looks and tastes like chicken. they are over $20 a pound at the co-op/HFS. I have found some recipes for them but am not sure what I want to do with it. It is probably 3-4 pounds. I would get big money selling it at the co-op but I'm not sure if they buy from just anybody.

Did you just find this growing in your yard?! I've never even heard of one.

Yeah, that freaked me out a little bit at first - is it a mushroom? is it chicken? (shroom, I'm assuming, but what's the chicken reference about?) Well eat it girl!

Chicken mushrooms are wild mushrooms that look and taste like chicken. When you break it, it tears along a grain like cooked chicken breast does. Unfortunately this one was wormy deep inside and I had to throw it out. I was very disappointed! I found it Saturday in someone's yard but they were not home. Then Tuesday I saw they had thrown it onto a pile of yard waste and so I took it without asking. But since it was cut off a couple days before it had started to get wormy. I cleaned so much of it before I knew. I was going to make it curried! Oh well I figure another one will grow there. Maybe I can make some money selling them.

If you're going to throw it out... make sure it's thrown out in your garden! It might still have some spores left...

I am going to watch that yard really carefully for when it sprouts again.

Please folks check your yards by oak trees to find an orange large mushroom then break it and see if it tears like chicken. Then look at photos online of mushrooms to make sure it is a chicken mushroom and then enjoy!
Anyway, I was meter reading today and found the mother load mushroom! I asked the people if I could have it. They were very nice and gave me a bag (I keep lunch bags in my truck for mushrooms too) and wanted to talk about it. I showed them how to tell what it is and what it tastes like and all the stuff they wanted to know. But as we started to tear pieces we saw it was wormy. I am so mad at these worms! Oh well now that I am on the hunt I will watch for them all over and hopefully find some that are not wormy.
