Cream of tarter?

What is cream of tarter? One of the recipies (can't remember which one off hand) in heathers book calls for it and I've never heard of it. I spent about 15 minutes walking around Econo Foods looking for it. As you can probably guess, i'm not much of a culinary master. I figure as long as the product is edible, doesn't cause a flair up and the cooking doesn't result in a 4 alarm fire, I'm doing good. What is it? Where do I find it? thanks.

Cream of tartar is a very old-fashioned flavoring. I know McCormick makes it, and I'm sure there are other brands as well. Here's a picture:

Are you sure they don't have it at your grocery store? I have never been to one that didn't have it.
BTW it is a by product of wine making and used as a thickener of sorts, a must in snickerdoodle cookies.

I don't think there was a safe snickerdoodle recipe posted on the boards... but there is now! Here's one I've been meaning to try!

Low-Fat Snickerdoodles
(Makes 60 cookies)

1/3 cup soy margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
3 egg whites (or 1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp Egg Beaters)
2 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup soy milk soured with 1 Tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons sugar

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
Mix together the butter and sugar, add the egg whites and beat well.
In another bowl, combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt.
Add the buttermilk and the dry mixture to the butter mixture, and stir to combine.
Combine the cinnamon with the 2 tablespoons of sugar.
Taking a teaspoonful of dough at a time, roll the dough into a ball in your hands, then roll it in the cinnamon-and-sugar mixture.
Place on the prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart and bake in the preheated oven for about 8 minutes, or until lightly browned.
