Hello! I am brand-new to this board...well, I have been lurking for a while, but feeling reluctant to give up "good" food. Now I'm bad enough off to realize that something has got to change, and would like to THANK everyone for these fantastic recipes. They give me hope that I won't have to eat just bread and water for the rest of my life.

A question, though. All of the information is completely overwhelming. Do you all have any suggestions on a simple place to start? I already avoid dairy and wheat, but the rest of this information is very, very new! Thanks for any help you have to give.

Do you avoid wheat because of a condition other than IBS? Wheat is okay for IBS, and as pasta, bread, and crackers are a huge source of soluable fiber, I wouldn't cut out wheat unless you need to for another reason (celiac).

Hi, Amanda. I noticed that wheat is a trigger for me. After a bowl of wheaties or some wheat thins, my stomach is gurgling and rolling around like you wouldn't believe. But instead of going to the bathroom, I end up with a puffy belly, pain, and gas. My old doctor tested me for celiac, but said it showed up negative, so I will let my specialist know when I go to see him on the 15th and ask him about the wheat again. Till then, I figured it was just safer to avoid it.

You might be having trouble with whole wheat, which still has the hull intact and so can be irritating. Try just cuttiong out whole wheat and sticking to regular wheat.
Also, I don't know a lot about testing for celiac, but I seem to remember that the test might show a false negative if you've been avoiding wheat. Talk to your doctor before you get retested and see if you are supposed to incorporate wheat into your diet before the test. Also do a search on all boards here, as there has been a lot of information about this.
Hope you start feeling better soon,
Amanda
PS -- in response to your first post in this thread about general suggestions, I highly recommend the hypno cd's in addition to the diet, as they have helped me and others greatly.

Ah-ha! Boy, do I feel dumb. I wasn't even thinking about the difference between whole wheat and wheat...which explains why I can eat "white" breads but not whole wheat breads. I think I may have a lot to learn about food. THAT alone may explain why my celiac test came back negative...I may only be having trouble with the whole wheat. That is a serious relief. But, of course, I will talk to my doctor.

I will consider the hypno tapes, but they are very pricey for me...I have a very little budget right now, and with Xmas and a kid, well...you understand. Have you by any chance tried yoga or meditation, though? I keep starting, but then stopping, so I'm not sure if this really helps any. But if anyone out there can say it does, I will stick to it! Thanks for all your help!

Oh I'm so glad that info helped you. Do you have Heather's books? This website is very helpful but the books really lay out all the facts and information. I notice that Heather has grouped some of the items into discount bundles, so you might want to take a look at that.
The CDs are pricey, I guess, but not compared to the tons of medications they have replaced for me, and not compared to a real live hypnotherapist. I have not tried yoga (well, a little bit in high school, 7 years ago ...), but click over to that message board and I'm sure you'll learn a lot.
I can't even put into words how much the combination of properly following the diet and using the hypno CD's has helped me. It's a lot to learn at first but what's more important than your health?
Hope you feel better soon,
Panda

Panda,

I just got Heather's book in the mail yesterday, and am very excited. Reading the board, too, is exciting...all the Xmas cookie recipes and fantastic food ideas are amazing. I really thought I was going to have to be deprived of everything, but now I see it's not true. The only thing I really miss so far is my ONE cup of coffee per day. Argh. Tea is not the same, but then again, not having a crampy tummy is wonderful.

I will check out the product "bundles" you mentioned. Thanks!

Glad you got the book -- which one did you get? I think during the first year after my diagnosis, I couldn't have lived without either one!
Also, I was a huge coffee addict, and switching to soy coffee helped me get through the transition. I don't drink the soy coffee anymore, but it was helpful in weaning me from coffee. Do a board search with no time limits on soy coffee and you can find out about all the different brands.

Soy COFFEE? EWWWWWW...and I thought soy cheese was bad. Hmmm. I will look into it, though. Oh...I have the "Eating for IBS" recipe book. It looks very, very yummy. Well, the recipes do, at any rate!

I think these books are so helpful because doctors don't know what to tell us a lot of the time. Mine pretty much said..."Oh, trial and error with the food. Don't eat what bugs you, when you figure it out." Nothing about fat, butter, egg yolks, whole wheat...no wonder I wasn't getting any "better!" I've felt a lot better just reading these message boards...not from visiting a doctor.

I suggest also getting IBS: The First Year. The cookbook has a lot of good information but the TFY thorougly goes into the nature of IBS, its causes, and a lot about triggers.
