Hey Guys,

I saw my GP today and he said they would like to hospitalize me for a little while before my small bowel follow through. Apparnetly they want to see if they can get some more tests run faster because I would be an inpatient, and also they could better monitor my blood levels and my food intake.

I don't know for sure what's happening yet, all they would tell me today was that they had reserved a bed and they would try and get back to me tomorrow, and that I could be going in as soon as tomorrow evening.

I've never been an inpatient before and am a little scared, so any advice would be really awesome.

Thanks guys!
Kelly

Kelly,

I don't have any tips because I've never been an inpatient, either, but I'm going out of town tomorrow and won't be back until Sunday. I just want to wish you good health, fast and good test results, and a speedy recovery! I will be thinking good thoughts for you!

I have been an inpatient 3 times. Having 2 babies and appendix out. All three were very good experiences. The nurses were all so nice and you just have to lay in bed and watch TV. Usually you will get the meds you need for pain if you need them.

You don't really need any clothes. I wore a hospital gown with tie in back. I did take my makeup and something to smell nice.

It's understandable that you are scared but there really is nothing to worry about. They should be able to take really good care of you and make sure you get all the tests done so you can feel better. Just think of it as an extended hotel stay.

Do you have family or friends that could come visit you? Sometimes that helps.

We will be thinking about you and wishing you the best of luck on your road to feeling better.

I've had 4 surgeries by the time i reached 30yrs old,so i know what to expect in hospitals.Bring a good book or magazines, bring some knitting or needlework if you feel up to it.Being in the hospital gets really boring, unless your getting the "good drugs"then you sleep thru most of your stay!! LOL, bring some slippers and your own bathrobe in case you feel like walking the halls. If you like, bring your own soaps/shampoos,cuz the ones they give you in the hospital suck! Bring a book of crossword puzzles if ya like those too,,,most of all, take advantage of your time there to rest and let the nurses take care of you.Good Luck,my thoughts are with you!

From the standpoint of someone who used to work in a hospital: DO bring things to do. TV-watching does get boring after a while, and you'll be really glad you brought a couple books, some knitting, whatever keeps you busy. I know you're there to get tests done, but try to think of it as relaxation without a whole lot of interruption. I'll also second the advice to bring your own toiletries, including hair gadgets (clips, etc) if you like to wear your hair pulled back. Hospital toiletries s*ck, and at least in our hospital, the gift/convenience shop never carried much of anything beyond toothbrushes and shower caps.

I know you're scared (I would be too!), but everything will be fine. They'll take care of you. I'll be thinking of ya - good luck!

Kelly,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be thinking about you tomorrow. You'll be just fine! The nurses will pamper you, and you'll get all the good meds you need---if you want them. Just get some rest, and enjoy this time off of your feet.

Hope they find out what's causing your problems.

Oh yes, definitley bring a crossword/word search book with you or any book you like. Bring a portable CD player if you have one and want to listen to some music, and maybe some earplugs for the nighttime if your hospital doesn't have any. If you're not being drugged down, it's very loud at night in the hospitals so I've always had to wear earplugs. And (I know this is just a bit childish) I always bring one of my sister's coloring books just because coloring always takes my mind off of what I'm doing I hope this helps and that it all goes well. Please update for us!!

Hi Kelly,

I was scared the first time I went into the hospital too. But then I was VERY pleasantly surprised! They really WAIT on you there -- no kidding -- and, maybe I'm just a lousy cook, but I thought the hospital food was FANTASTIC! I even kept my menu for years afterward!

The best advice I can give you is to RELAX and enjoy it! No kidding -- all you have to do is lie back and catch up on all your sleep, watch a lot of TV and enjoy being waited on!

Oh -- take a good book with you. Maybe even some trashy magazines. Last time I went to the hospital, I took my knitting. The only problem I had was that they drugged me, so I couldn't see my stitches very well, and after awhile I didn't give a damn! (Needless to say, when I got out of the hospital I had to rip it all out....)

Try to borrow your sister's laptop so you can keep in touch with us. We'll be anxious to hear the results of the tests. (I think this is all very good stuff, Kelly -- I really do.)
