Hey Guys,

I wasn't really sure where to post this, hoping to get some advice. For the last two nights I've woken up about 5 hours after I've gone to bed with horrifying pains in my legs. Kinda like the old "growing pains" you get as a kid. They stretch from my ankles up to mid thigh and they are so bad when I wake up I'm normally kicking and flailing and I end up needing to take some sort of painkiller before I go back to bed.

They've been hurting on and off during the day as well, but it's the waking me up part that's driving me nuts. Has anyone else experienced this? I know it's not that I've pulled a muscle or anything becuase I haven't been very active lately

Thanks,
Kelly

If I remember correctly I think you are in the process of possibly being diagnosed with Crohn's. I get a lot of pain in my legs, feet and hips that comes and goes, and was told that it is probably related to the Crohn's. I use the heating pad alot but sometimes it seems like nothing helps except time. My GI says that if it gets bad enough that I want medication, he will prescribe for me to insure that I don't take a pain killer that will make the Crohn's worse. You might want to check for more posts on the IBD board, I think I've seen stuff on pain there before.
Hope you feel better!

Kelly,

Have you been eating any bananas? These cramps can come from a lack of potassium, believe it or not, and yes, they hurt like heck.

Here's a blurb from a website:
Quote:

Low levels of certain minerals known as electrolytes—magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium—have long been linked to leg cramps. (Marathon runners sweating out the miles are particularly prone to this variety.) Certain drugs, such as diuretics have also been cited as a cause of leg cramps.

Just type in "leg cramps" into any search engine, and a whole host of sites will come up.

It could be something more serious, yes, but with all the meds you're on right now and stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if it's something this simple.

Hang in there! I know you're having a really tough time of it right now.

I used to have that problem with my legs and especially toes cramping up really painfully. I was told it may be from lack of potassium and starting eating bananas everyday, and it went away.
My problem probably wasn't as bad as yours, but it probably can't hurt eatin a couple of bananas, huh?
I hope it stops soon, it can be so painful!

Maybe it's the new medication you are taking? I know once when I started a new medicine, I had this strange side effect. Every night I felt the urge to stand up and shake my legs---almost like my legs were going to sleep. I think it's called tarknisia syndrome (not sure of the spelling.)
Better check with the doc or pharmacist about any medicines you are taking. (I don't mean to scare you, but sometimes this can be a permanent side effect. Needless to say, I quit taking that medication immediately! It scared the heck out of me!)

I've never experienced that before, although I have felt "anxiousness" in my legs if I have sugar before bedtime; I'll kind of flail around in bed for a long time; getting up and moving around is the only solution for me.

This, however, doesn't sound the same, it sounds a little more serious; I'd call the doc. I know you have a problem with the doc, but it's either that or go to a clinic.

Make sure you are getting enough calcium, magnesium, and potassium. If you take supplments try taking them in the evening.

I'm impressed you remembered that! You're right, my GP thinks Crohn's is a possibility but I haven't got a diagnosis yet, so I thought that might have something to do with it. I also currently have a rash on both shins so my legs are just doing all sorts of weird stuff

You mentioned that your doc wanted to be sure to prescribe painkillers that wouldn't make the Crohn's worse...he/she didn't happen to mention what ones would did they? I try and avoid NSAIDS but right now am taking Percocets...and sometimes worry that they are making it worse.

Thanks,
Kelly

Hey Bev,

Thanks for your concern. I'm actually seeing the doc on Monday so I should be ok until then. I'm curious to know how it works in the US, can you just call up your doc and ask a question? Because basically all I can do is call and they'll schedule an appointment (and it won't be for the same day) or go to emerg, those are the only options. It would be nice to able to just call, but they won't give any advice/consultations over the phone

Is that for everyone, including children? I don't know what I would do. I had to take my 4 year old in today because she had a high fever through the night. They got us in right away. I know her dr. will also call and give us suggestions for lowering the fever but since it is Friday and I won't be able to see anyone until Monday, we went in today. I would take the hour and half wait to find out nothing is seriously wrong and pay a co-pay then to make an appt. for sometime later.

I guess she just a cold that starts with a fever. It was scary though. Any problems and any of our dr. will get usin right away. My ob/gyn won't take any chances if I call with problems. I'm in immdediately and I like it that way. I also have a 24 hr. medical help line through our insurance that I have yet to us.
